Poverty Bay retain ND Women’s Challenge Trophy

The Poverty Bay Women's Cricket team have successfully defended the ND Challenge Trophy for the 2011/12 season defeating Waikato Valley and Hamilton in emphatic fashion at the weekend in Mount Maunganui. Saturdays challenge Waikato Valley made 169/10 bowled out in the 36 over. Fern McIldowie 3-35 was the chief destroyer Mel Knight 2-33 off bowled tightly. It was Karen McDonald's slow mediums 1-20 that claimed the critical wicket of the former White Fern and previous international player of the year Nicola Browne caught by Patti Grogan for 55, as the Waikato team threatened to post a score in excess of 200.



In reply Poverty Bay were in trouble early at 2-12 with openers Fern McIdowie 0 Karen McDonald 3 back in the hut. Sara Stannard 30 and Kerryanne Tomlinson 79 shared a 3rd wicket partnership of 52. Mel Knight 2 worked a 30 run partnership in unison with Tomlinson to take the score to 94/4 in the 18th over. Tessa McDonald 26 not out shared a 57 run partnership with Tomlinson 79 was out with the total at 151, Patti Grogan 3 and Tessa McDonald 26 got the side home in the 31st over.  Tomlinson 79 again proved to be a dominant figure in this competition Sara Stannard 30 and Tessa Mc Donald 26 made significant contributions in the chase. 



In Sundays game against Hamilton the Poverty Bay Women’s produce a splendid bowling performance to bowl the much fancied Hamilton sided out for 88. Kerryanne Tomlinson 3-24 off 8 Tessa McDonald 1-12 off 7 , Fern McIldowie 1-24 put the blow torch on Hamilton early. Mel Knight 1-11 off 6 took the vital wicket of Janice Fraser 26 as the bay girls bundled them in the 29th over for 88. 

With tails up the PBCA women made no race of it with Sara Stannard 34no Kerryanne Tomlinson 36 completing a fine 5 games for the bay side. Moana McLelland finishing the job with 11 runs off 8 balls to make it 5 out of 5 and making the Poverty Bay the Home of the ND Trophy until next season.
