As we assembled at our home ground Seddon Park we wandered down victory lane reminiscing on the many successes Northern Districts have had over the years. We were fresh and rested and ready to take on Auckland. However the weather had other ideas the first two games were abandoned without a ball being bowled. White Ferns selections had just been announced and our Morna Nielsen got the nod to tour with the national team after some fine performances. The final day gave us good weather and a game would be played. This game was important for Auckland as it would determine if they made the final or not.
Auckland won the toss and decided to bowl. We made 133 in our 20 overs with most batters pitching in for a team effort. Heidi 20, Wolfy 22, Nico 21, Morna 20, no one could push on as regular wickets fell and restricted what could have been a capable total. Auckland’s import Stefanie Taylor and experienced Paula Gruber bowling extremely well for Auckland claiming 2 for 15 off 4. Stefanie Taylor (2011 ICC Player of the Year) proved her worth by single handedly leading Auckland to victory. Taylor's unbeaten 86 won them the game which included five 4's and five 6's which was an impressive performance.
Although we ended on a disappointing note the best thing is we have come so far as a team and individuals that next year we will be up there. We finished both formats in fourth place which has been our best performance, onwards and upwards from here.
A big congratulations to Morna, Anna, Brooke, Natalie and Felicity for their NZ honours. We wish you all the very best and know you will do yourselves and ND proud. Big thanks must go to Owen for taking us on this season, it has been a season to remember! We now have those skills that you drilled into us locked in the membrane, the dummy runs, quick singles and positive intent. Thanks to our major sponsor Jason Wheadon and the team at SWEAT.
