Back to Girl TalkSpirit shake up those Cantabs
Coming off three massive wins the team morale was high and we were ready to take down top of the table and title defenders the Canterbury Magicians.
New Year’s Day provided us with lovely sunshine and quite the audience! A few of our supporters indulging in a few, being festive singing “that’s the way, aha aha, we like it” keeping everyone entertained. Mornana won the toss and we decided to bowl and see if we could use the green pitch to our advantage. The Magicians got off to a flyer with most of their top order scoring runs. At one point it looked like we would be chasing something near 200 but we managed to contain them to 146. A total we knew we could chase down if we applied ourselves in the batting department. The run chase didn’t get off to a good start as we lost both openers early but our in form Wolfy (33) and Nico (32) put us back on track with a 54 run partnership. In the end we needed 14 off the last over and we fell short by 5 runs. We sure gave them a fright and shook them up just like the earthquakes. Now they know we are real contenders to beating them.
Day 2 was the one day match and the Magicians won the toss and decided to bowl. After their rark up the day before, we knew they would come out with a point to prove as to why they were at the top of the table. Magicians bowled tight lines and runs were hard to come by. Doddy made 41 and Nicky B 68 but we could only put together a mediocre 192. Rachel Candy had fine figures of 3 for 29 off 10. Once again the experienced batting order fired again. Floss and Brooka bowled economically with Mornana being the stand out with figures of 2 for 33 off 10. In the end we lost by 6 wickets and 15 balls to spare. A highlight of the day would hands down have to be Wolfy's 2 AMAZING catches. Two identical balls being what I thought was smashed over her head to the boundary but no! BOOM she plucked them both out of the air, it just goes to show that white girls can jump!
The third day was our last chance to get one over those Cantabs! We won the toss and decided to have a crack with the ball. We took the early wicket of the in form Frankie but the experience once again putting together another big partnership getting them to 156. We lost both openers early and we were 2 for 2…eeek! But Wolfy (32) and Nico (58) put together a great knock. But alas, the asking rate was too much and we finished on 132.
Although we finished the round without a win we didn’t get our heads down as we almost pulled off a huge upset showing everyone that we were right up there and we executed some good cricketing skills and as Nicky B would say “BANK IT” and use what we have learnt for next season where we will be serious title contenders. So we departed Christchurch a little bit wiser and a lot tired from eight days there away from friends and family over the holiday period but we head home for a few days to rejuvenate and prepare to take on our rival neighbours Auckland on our home ground.
Not out,
